In financial year 2023/24, TPDC plans to extend the existing high pressure natural gas transmission pipeline (steel pipe) from Da es Salaam (Kinyerezi Receiving Station) to Chalinze via Kibaha City Council (Kibaha CC) and Kibaha District Council (Kibaha DC) to Chalinze and connecting the immediate industrial customers, institutions, households and CNG refilling stations for vehicles. This is due to high demand of natural gas found in these areas for above mentioned uses while there is no existing gas infrastructure. In order to achieve this plan, TPDC procured a reputable consultant to undertake the following itemized activities (consultancy services);
Conducting Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) a project to construct a high pressure natural gas transmission pipeline from Dar es Salaam to Chalinze over the selected wayleave /route
The Consultant submitted the preliminary Route Identification report for the 90.5 km pipeline from Kinyerezi to Chalinze. Using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools and technical, economic, and environmental criteria, different route options were analyzed.
The final route has not yet been confirmed. The Consultant is addressing comments from TPDC and incorporating additional information from stakeholders to prepare the final route selection report.
Acceptance of the Inception Report under implementation of this project was submitted for review and then approved, 17th April 2025
TPDC signed a consultancy services contract with Gulf Interstate Engineering in association with Paulsam Group for Route Identification, Feasibility Study, Front-End Engineering Design (FEED), and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the pipeline.
The tender for procurement of consultant was launched in July 2024 and his scopes of the assignment are to identify pipeline route, carry out feasibility study with FEED & preparation of Bill of Quantities (BOQ) at FEED stage and carry out the ESIA. The consultant shall prepare and submit to TPDC Route Survey and Topographical report for the preferred route; Feasibility Study Report with FEED and BOQ at FEED stage meeting AACE Class 2 for the purpose of control or tender budgeting; and ESIA Report and Certificate of Environmental Clearance for the project.
In December 2023, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) conducted a survey to identify potential industrial customers in Chalinze, Kibaha District Council (Kibaha DC), and Kibaha City Council (Kibaha TC). This survey was driven by the continuous growth of industrialization in the Coast region. The survey aims at developing a high-pressure natural gas transmission pipeline from Kinyerezi in Dar es Salaam to Chalinze in Pwani Region. The pipeline will enhance gas supply to industries, power generation, and other users along the route, including major industrial zones such as Kwala.
