The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has implemented an important education and awareness program targeting stakeholders and communities in areas affected by the 3D seismic survey project in the Lindi-Mtwara exploration block. This awareness initiative aims to enhance stakeholder and community understanding of the project's significance and promote cooperation in its implementation. Speaking during the implementation of the program, Dr. Shaidu Nuru, the Project Manager for Oil and Gas Exploration in the Lindi-Mtwara Block and also a Senior Geologist at TPDC, said that the awareness campaign is part of the overall project execution plan. TPDC aims to reach all key stakeholders from the regional level down to districts, wards, villages, and hamlets, with the main objective being to educate them on the importance of the project and encourage their cooperation. Dr. Shaidu further explained, “The project is being implemented by TPDC over an 18-month period starting in July 2025, and it will utilize modern technology, including the use of specialized vehicles that generate small vibrations along with receivers that capture the returning vibrations from underground. This technology enables experts to obtain detailed images of subsurface geological structures, which helps in making informed decisions about suitable drilling locations and reduces costs and risks associated with exploration.” On his part, TPDC Senior Community Development Officer Mr. Ally Mluge highlighted that TPDC has consistently conducted public education programs to inform communities about the importance of the Corporation's projects and activities in contributing to national economic growth. He added that such community involvement helps to simplify the implementation of TPDC’s operations and projects. In another development, Mr. Hamisi Chikandanga, Chairperson of Village for Mtwara Region, commended TPDC for organizing the education program. He stated that it had helped residents understand the government's development efforts through TPDC. He also urged the Corporation to continue conducting similar programs during the implementation of future projects. This public awareness program covers 30 villages affected by the project, including 22 villages in Mtwara (namely Hiari, Msijute, Lokonde, Mayanga, Nangumi, Utende, Namgogoli, Ndumbwe, Mnyundo, Mbuo, Mwatehi, Changarawe, Muungano, Mwembetogwa, Mkajuni Chini, Mkwajuni Juu, Lyowa, Manamawa, and Namkapi) and 8 villages in Lindi (namely Mtegu, Sudi, Madangwa, Nachunyu, Mmumbu, Navanga, Mongomoho, and Shuka). The successful completion of this awareness program marks a significant step toward ensuring transparency and community engagement in energy development projects, while also laying a strong foundation for continued collaboration between TPDC and local communities.
