3D SEISMIC DATA ACQUISITION PROJECT IN THE LINDI-MTWARA EXPLORATION BLOCK

Project Overview

TPDC is currently undertaking a 3D seismic data acquisition project in the Lindi-Mtwara Block. This acquisition is designed to gather high-resolution subsurface images of the area's geological structures. Using advanced seismic technology, the project aims to reduce exploration risks and provide essential data for future decisions on drilling locations, ultimately optimizing the discovery and development of potential oil and natural gas resources. A total of 736.3 square kilometers of the seismic data will be acquired, and the project is expected to be completed within 18 months commencing from July 2025.

Project Area

The project is located in the coastal regions of Lindi and Mtwara, specifically targeting the Lindi-Mtwara exploration block. The Block represents a strategic area for potential hydrocarbon discoveries, encompassing the Lindi Licence area and the relinquished portions of the Mtwara Licence Area. The Block encompasses an area of ~ 3,319.14 km2, covering both onshore and offshore parts. The extensive coverage ensures a comprehensive survey of the Block's geology to identify the most promising areas for further exploration.

Significance of the Project to the Nation

This project holds immense significance for Tanzania's national development and energy independence. The detailed seismic data will enhance the country's understanding of its hydrocarbon resources, which is vital for ensuring energy security and attracting strategic investors in the energy sector. By providing a clear geological picture, the project directly contributes to the efficient and cost-effective discovery of new gas fields, solidifying Tanzania's position as a key energy player in East Africa and boosting the national economy.

Geological Mapping and Scouting

The initial phase of the project involved detailed geological mapping and scouting of the project area. This activity included reviewing existing geological data as well as conducting on-the-ground surveys to understand the surface and near-surface geology. The purpose of this work was to identify key geological features, potential hazards, and optimal routes for the seismic survey lines, ensuring the most efficient and safe data acquisition process.

The core activity of the project is the geophysical survey, which uses specialized equipment to generate and record seismic waves. The acquisition will require mixed energy sources and receivers. For the land part, vibroseis will be used, but explosives will be required in areas inaccessible to vibroseis. For the offshore (river) area, air guns will be used in deep water, but for shallow areas, the sources will be located on the land part closest to the river shore. The generated energy pulses travel deep within the earth and are then reflected back to the surface. The returning signals are captured by a specialized sensor-equipment (nodes) which, after data processing, are used to create a detailed three-dimensional image of the subsurface.

Environmental Impact Assessment

TPDC has ensured that the project adheres to all national and international environmental requirements by undertaking Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). This study ensures that potential environmental and social impacts associated with 3D seismic acquisition operations are identified, assessed and managed appropriately to meet the compliance requirements of Environmental Management Act. 2004. The Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) has been developed to eliminate, minimize or reduce adverse impacts of the project to the environment and the community.

Engaging all relevant stakeholders has been a top priority to ensure the project's smooth implementation and community acceptance. TPDC conducted extensive consultations with local authorities, community leaders, and local residents in Lindi and Mtwara. This proactive approach has established a strong foundation of trust and transparency, allowing for open dialogue to address community concerns regarding employment opportunities, compensation, and other project-related issues.
